What We Learned
We have found students appreciate the quick access to frequently asked questions, outlines of policies and procedures, and notification of student engagement opportunities they would otherwise miss or overlook, as a way to enhance their academic advising experiences. However, in the early stages of this new platform, we must continually build community through discussion posts and a one stop place for announcing engagement opportunities in order to add value to Canvas as an academic tool, or it just becomes just another stagnate informational source with no connection. The same holds true as work to engage academic advisors across campus.

What we learned?
Advisors are saying they feel more connected to the advising community and have more opportunities to associate with advisors they might not be able to otherwise. Canvas as also improved the method by which advisors hear about and stay updated regarding professional development events on campus. One advisor stated, "Information is in one place. I no longer have to track emails. I can look at Canvas for past information.” Our assessment suggests that many advisors have not used Canvas before and therefore more training needs to be provided in order for it to be an effective communication tool for building community among academic advisors.

ECON ADVISOR Nicole O'Shea
The PSY Advising Center course went live the end of December 2016.
List of Benefits
- Easier phone appointments. They can get everything they need in one stop. I can easily talk them through the Canvas site where all of the resources are.
- I've cut my daily email questions in half and I have more time to advise graduate students since I do both undergrad and grad advising.
- I have more time to pursue my own professional development.
List of Drawbacks:
- How do we add value for the students who are graduating and don't see a need to access the resources?
- Students are complaining about too many messages from Canvas. (An education on how to use the Notifications inside of Canvas will hopefully help this and deciding where announcements should come from, etc.)
The PSY Advising Center course went live first week of Spring Semester, January 2017.
List of Benefits:
- Departmental events have gone up in attendance.
- Using the Inbox feature in Canvas I feel I can communicate faster and we are still in FERPA compliance.
List of Drawbacks:
- Students are asking to be unsubscribed for a variety of reasons. They are not getting the resource.
- Adding students can be a hassle to coordinate.
- Students are complaining about too many messages from Canvas. Especially when I updated calendar events, they get notified about every change.
Next steps
As we move forward with the Advising Center courses, we will be updating them. The following is a list of the next steps we'll be taking in 2017.
Groups Feature in Canvas
The Groups feature in Canvas allows us to build community with students in their specific department. Create groups for veteran's, transfer, and first year students. We can also create groups for mentoring, specific emphases, etc.
Adding Videos
Videos that are general to advising will be created and shared by the advisors so one person is not doing them all. The advisors will also create videos for their specific departments. Some of those videos include the following:
eLearnings
A few students gave us the feedback that they would like to have some interactive modules in Canvas with the content. We've targeted a few of those modules to create eLearnings for using Camtasia. Some of those would include using Notifications in Canvas, How to Apply to Graduate School Basics, etc.
Pages in Canvas to Target a Specific Audience
Pages inside of Canvas will be created to target specific audiences such as transfer students, first year students, seniors, etc.
Adding More Departments
By the end of 2017 we will have FCS and POLS on board with an Advising Center course in Canvas.
Online Meetings
By the end of 2017 all courses will begin using online advising tools to meet with the students. Right now we only use it with the PSY department.
